Dress for Success Indianapolis Encourages Area Organizations to Host Donation Drive

Send One Suit (S.O.S.) Week to take place April 20-24, 2015

INDIANAPOLIS—Dress for Success Indianapolis is asking for the community’s support to increase its level of participation during the annual Send One Suit – Week drive, April 20 – 24.  Last year, 55 business and organization hosted donation drives.  This year, Dress for Success Indianapolis hopes to increase that number to 78.

Only donations from the community make it possible for client to say things like, “I was feeling low and unsure of the direction of my life and what I can bring to a company.  After coming to Dress for Success Indianapolis to get a suit and accessories for my interview, I am now confident about my professional appearance for the interview and getting the job.”

Dress for Success will use the gently-used suits, blouses and financial contributions collected during Send One Suit – Week to help prepare more than 1,250 Indianapolis-area women with interview-appropriate attire. Clothing items are given to disadvantaged women through the Suits for Success program to help transform the way they look and feel about their upcoming interview. Women who participate in the program are referred to Dress for Success Indianapolis through one of more than 100 partner agencies, including Harrison College, the title sponsor of Send One Suit – Week.

Businesses and organizations that want to host a Send One Suit – Week donation drive at their location can sign up online at through March 31, 2015.

At Dress for Success Indianapolis, a volunteer personal shopper assists each woman with selecting an entire interview ensemble (suit, shoes, jewelry, hosiery, etc.) and provide interview tips to help empower them as they look to start or further their careers. Women can also come back to the Suits for Success program after they are hired for attire they need for work (business casual, scrubs, non-skid shoes and work pants, etc.).

Classic Cleaners is supporting for the ninth year by providing coupons for $10 off a dry cleaning order of $20 or more to those who donate during this campaign at any privately-sponsored drive.

Clothing donations can be made throughout the week at any Classic Cleaners store and financial donations to support the non-profit’s operations can be made at All donations support Dress for Success Indianapolis.

Points of Light Certifies Dress for Success Indianapolis as a Service Enterprise

Dress for Success Indianapolis is pleased to announce that we have been certified by Points of Light as a Service Enterprise. A Service Enterprise fundamentally leverages volunteers and their skills to successfully deliver on the social mission of their organizations.

With this certification, Dress for Success Indianapolis becomes one of the first organizations in the United States to be recognized as a Service Enterprise by Points of Light, the world’s largest organization dedicated to volunteer service. Research conducted by the TCC Group, a national program and evaluation firm, found that organizations operating as Service Enterprises outperform peer organizations on all aspects of organizational effectiveness, and are more adaptable, sustainable and capable of scaling their work.

With support from United Way of Central Indiana, Dress for Success Indianapolis completed an extensive assessment, training/consulting, and certification process that led to this recognition. By achieving this level of excellence and certification, Dress for Success Indianapolis is now better equipped to leverage the time and talent of volunteers in building our organizational capacity.

In 2014, Dress for Success Indianapolis relied on 9,076 volunteer hours given by over 300 volunteers. The value these volunteers give equates to $195,678. Volunteers are utilized throughout the organization. From board and committee leadership, to providing direct services to the women we serve, volunteers touch every aspect of Dress for Success Indianapolis.

Sometimes, you need just a little bit of help to succeed. Your donations to Dress for Success Indianapolis help us empower women to restore their lives. Every day I meet women who are overcoming obstacles and moving ahead with courage, dignity and determination. When I think about a woman who has lived this journey and inspires me, I think of Allyson.
Allyson is a believer, she thinks that whatever you believe you can do, you will. When she was suddenly let go from a company she had been with for 10 years, Allyson’s first reaction was sadness, her second was that she needed a new job – now. Allyson applied for unemployment through WorkOne the night she lost her job, and she started attending employment workshops there the next morning.
She secured an interview and was getting ready for the second interview when her caseworker suggested an appointment with us. “I didn’t think I was needy enough, but I only had one nice pair of pants since I could wear jeans and T-shirts at my old job. I was scared at first about receiving free clothing, but once I met my personal shopper and saw the boutique, I was blown away. I couldn’t believe how great I looked and I knew then that I could just really concentrate on selling myself.” Allyson landed that job, and she’s still there today.
Although it sounds like Allyson had an easy transition, that is far from the truth. Replacing her previous salary proved to be impossible. Losing her job also meant she lost her apartment. Having to move to a cheaper area of the city, Allyson now lives in a neighborhood she thinks is unsafe. Her self-confidence really took a beating after losing such long-term employment.

Allyson came back to us to continue her personal and professional development and joined our Professional Women’s Group (PWG). Through PWG, Allyson is working on building her self-confidence and has surrounded herself with a network of positive women all working hard to change their lives. We were touched when she told us, “The members and staff are often a second family for some, and for many others, a very important first family.”

Allyson is now working hard to find a better paying position. Until she does, her pet and house-sitting business helps fill in the gaps in her budget. She’s also giving back by volunteering at Dress for Success Indianapolis.

Your gift to Dress for Success Indianapolis will allow us to continue providing critical programming that empowers women to succeed. I’ll leave you with Allyson’s words, “Dress for Success gives us the tools and resources to improve ourselves, which in turn improves our self-esteem. We can see that anything is possible if we just believe in ourselves.”

Barbara S. Ellsworth,
Executive Director

P.S. Your donation is a gift of hope. You’re giving Allyson and the 1,300+ women we will serve next year the chance to create a better future for themselves and their families. Thank you in advance for making more stories like this possible.

15 Days of Giving for our 15th Birthday!

At Dress for Success Indianapolis, we serve women who are working hard to change their lives. We rely on our community to provide resources that make our work possible. We thrive as an organization by making the most out of every dollar donated. We may be known for our suits, but we need much more than suits to ensure that our women thrive in work, and in life.

To celebrate our 15th year serving the Indianapolis community, we’ve come up with 15 different items that we desperately need, but don’t often get through donations. As you do your holiday giving this year, we’d love if you would consider donating any, or all, of the following items to Dress for Success Indianapolis. We’ll be collecting them at our office at 820 N. Meridian St. every day from 9am-5pm.

Thank you for your partnership and belief that every woman deserves the chance to succeed!

#GivingTuesday is #GivingShoesDay

Indianapolis (December 2, 2014): Dress for Success® is once again turning #GivingTuesday into #GivingShoesDay on Tuesday, December 2, 2014, to honor this day of giving.  For the third year in a row, #GivingShoesDay encourages women to donate their professional shoes to one of more than 135 Dress for Success affiliates across the world—including Dress for Success Indianapolis.

Last year, Fergie Footwear partnered with Dress for Success Worldwide to give something back to those that donate their shoes on this distinguished day of charity and, this year, the shoe brand is upping the ante.  The top 10 individual shoe donors from around the world will receive a complimentary pair of limited holiday edition Raegan heels, in addition, the top three Dress for Success affiliates across the globe that garner the most total donations will also be awarded with a special gift of brand new shoes directly from Fergie Footwear. Last year, one of the donors from Indianapolis was among the top 10 donors and received a complimentary pair of Fergie Footwear heels.

Joining the ranks of post-Thanksgiving campaigns such as Black Friday, Small Business Saturday and Cyber Monday, #GivingShoesDay has proven to be a tremendous #GivingTuesday success for Dress for Success Indianapolis. In 2013 over 250 pairs of interview-appropriate shoes were donated. This year, Dress for Success Indianapolis is partnering with central Indiana Teachers Credit Union (TCU) branches to provide donors even more locations to donate. Interview-appropriate shoes will be collected on December 2nd from 9am-5pm at any Central Indiana TCU branch, or directly at Dress for Success Indianapolis (820 N. Meridian St., Indianapolis, IN).

“Dress for Success Indianapolis does so much more than provide interview attire for women in our community. We also help women step closer to self-sufficiency by helping them prepare for, secure and keep sustainable employment. In order to do this, we rely on our amazing community to continue to provide resources so our women have the opportunity to achieve success in work, and in life,” said Barbara Ellsworth, Executive Director.

To participate in Giving Shoes Day, women can simply bring their shoes to any central Indiana TCU location, or directly to Dress for Success Indianapolis at 820 N. Meridian Street on Tuesday, December 2nd from 9am-5pm.  For those who would like to donate shoes for #GivingShoesDay, but are not able to bring them in on that day, the professional footwear can be sent to the Dress for Success Indianapolis, where donations of clothing, shoes and accessories are always accepted.  These shipped donations must arrive by December 2 to be considered for #GivingShoesDay, with a note stating that #GivingShoesDay is what the shoes are being donated for.
