In 2019, while attending Ivy Tech Community College, Sophea Chhun found herself at a crossroads. Juggling studies and job applications was no small feat, but she had made valuable connections as a member of Indy Women in Tech and the Pass the Torch for Women Foundation. These connections led her to our doors at Dress for Success Indianapolis (DFSI).
Stepping into DFSI for the first time, Sophea felt comforted and empowered. The team gave her a warm welcome and offered invaluable support. With their help, she polished her resume and chose the perfect outfit for her interviews. This newfound confidence paid off when she landed a job at Infosys Ltd. Sophea soon learned about DFSI’s Professional Women’s Group (PWG) and was invited to join. Eager to expand her horizons, she joined—and it was a decision that she said “marked the beginning of a transformative journey.”
PWG became a cornerstone in Sophea’s life. Every week, she engaged with the group both in person and online, gaining a wealth of knowledge in areas such as physical and emotional care, self-defense, and financial management. Stress management became an essential skill, helping her navigate challenges, both personal and professional.
The support from PWG extended beyond education. The group regularly invited leaders to share their experiences and insights on conducting business and managing people in the workplace. These sessions were enlightening, and Sophea found herself growing in confidence and capability.
PWG events such as summer picnics, family gatherings at the zoo, and visits to museums provide Sophea with a deep sisterhood bond with other members, turning them into more than just a professional network. They became Sophea’s “Sisters in Success,” a family that shared her joys and sorrows, supporting one another through life’s ups and downs.
Sophea said one of the most exciting experiences for her was being invited to model for “Stepping Out in Style” in 2021 and 2024. This opportunity fulfilled a childhood dream of hers to become a fashion model, a dream she never imagined could come true.
Today, Sophea looks back at her journey with immense pride. The support from DFSI and PWG empowered her to become a strong, confident, and successful woman. She evolved from a student seeking direction to a professional capable of supporting herself and inspiring others.
The Professional Women’s Group (PWG) is an ongoing program hosted by DFSI, offered to help employed women develop skills and knowledge that can propel them to a sustainable career. Learn more about PWG here.
