Kristian Stricklen is a leader, communicator, and community advocate whose work spans education, public engagement, strategic communications, and executive leadership. As President of Madam Walker Legacy Center, she is helping carry forward the legacy of one of Indianapolis’ most influential entrepreneurs while creating new opportunities for the community.

- I am a mother to 18-year-old Jacob. When Jacob was four, he was diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder. Since that time, I created Jacob’s Ladder, an initiative to bring awareness to autism and early intervention, especially in children of color.
- I am the President and CEO of the Madam Walker Legacy Center, a national historic landmark built in 1927 as the headquarters for Madam C.J. Walker’s business empire. During my tenure, the organization has become debt-free, created a $7.3 million endowment, expanded the venue to include a rooftop venue space, and elevated the organization’s national presence.
- My career background bridges education, communications, public engagement, and executive leadership. Prior to my current role, I built a career in strategic communications and engagement that spanned more than 25 years.

“Elevate” is this year’s theme. What does elevate mean to you, and how are you living it out right now?
Elevate means to always level up. Every day, I look to see how I can improve myself and my community.
Describe a moment when you stepped into a new level of confidence or growth?
When my son was diagnosed with autism and I began working with Autism Speaks. It pushed me to be more confident about speaking my truth and educating others about autism.
What empowerment advice would you give a woman who’s ready to take her next step?
Believe in yourself no matter what. If you don’t share your talents with the world, the world will miss out on someone amazing.
Explain what motivates or grounds you when life or work feels challenging?
My faith and my family remind me of who I am. I love what I do, but it is only a small portion of who I am. I’m grateful for the love and support of people who love me for me.
Tell us about any unique skills, talents, or interesting hobbies.
I love to travel to warm places like Mexico and Jamaica. The ocean brings me peace.
How and why do you support the Dress for Success Indianapolis purpose?
It is so important to support other women and help them to be and feel their best. Every woman deserves a chance to stand on her heels and make an impact in her own unique way.
