Senior Director of Marketing & Communications
In this newly created position, the Senior Director of Marketing and Communications is responsible for leading the marketing and communication efforts for DFSI to include development and implementation of strategies to promote the organization’s mission, vision, and achievements of goals to a wide range of audiences.
This position is ideal for an individual who has strong ties in the Indianapolis community, enjoys meeting with donors and volunteers, and who can serve as the chief storyteller, creating compelling narratives to showcase the organization’s initiatives across various communication platforms.
This is a full-time, exempt, 40-hour per week position and reports to the Executive Director. The Senior Director of Marketing and Communications has flexibility to work remotely if desired with the expectation of attendance at fundraising events, monthly volunteer orientations, and monthly staff meetings. This role is a member of the senior leadership team and will work closely with the Executive Director and the Senior Director of Operations and Impact. The candidate must live in the Indianapolis area.
Primary Responsibilities
MARKETING
- Identify and understand all DFSI target audiences and ensure marketing strategy is inclusive of all audiences
- Lead the development, execution, and oversight of the DFSI marketing and communications plan, ensuring clarity, measurability, and alignment with the strategic and operational goals.
- Establish clear, measurable goals are that align with DFSI’s strategic plan
- Develop a brand management strategy that incorporates consistent messaging across all channels
- Ensure all visual elements are consistent across DFSI to reinforce brand management
- Provide thought leadership and creativity to the Executive Director for fund raising campaigns, donor communications, event marketing, and sponsorship activations
- Work closely with the Senior Director of Operations and Impact on development of marketing for client programming to include support of the PWG programming
- Oversee all marketing data and analytics to effectively measure all marketing and communications efforts
- Analyze data to inform strategies and drive improvement of fundraising campaigns
- Determine key metric requirements and inform stakeholders on a regular basis
- Develop community engagement channels to reach new clients; attract and retain volunteers; increase donors and donations; and support partnerships with organizations and businesses
- Develop training for DFSI staff and volunteers on marketing and communications best practices
- Act as liaison to the Marketing Committee to ensure marketing strategy is implemented
- Identification and oversight of marketing contractors to assist with a wide variety of digital marketing needs, maintenance of DFSI website, social media, press releases, media relations, and assistance with building foundational marketing capabilities
- Work with the Directory of Operations and Impact on the delivery of the monthly new volunteer orientation
- Work with the Executive Director on one event each year to increase awareness of DFSI to prospective donors and aid with the retention of existing donors
COMMUNICATIONS
- Act as the ‘chief storyteller’ for DFSI by creating compelling stories to highlight the impact of the organization’s work
- Advocate for the organization’s mission and goals via written and verbal communications
- Lead communication strategies to increase mission awareness, enhance media relations, strengthen employee engagement, and strengthen stakeholder/donor relationships
- Oversee digital and transitional marketing communication infrastructure, to include website management, a strong social media presence, and effective email and print campaigns
- Create high-quality content for videos, photos, and graphics
- Publish content to share success stories, updates and insights via blogs, web, and social media
- Responsible for public relations for media relations, press releases, television and radio, and crisis communications
- Stepping Out In Style is the primary DFSI fundraiser. Serve as a member of the Stepping Out in Style Logistics Team to ensure program messaging is aligned with programing priority goals and to promote marketing for the event.
- Ensure alignment of communication strategies with DFSI goals through collaboration with internal and external team, consistent messaging across all platforms, and compelling content creation.
- Serve as liaison with external agencies and the Marketing Committee to ensure alignment on communication strategies
ON-GOING
- Be a positive and enthusiastic representative of and advocate for DFSI
- Develop good working relationships with the small DFSI team and be willing to work on a variety of projects to support the organization as needed
- Project a professional and positive personal image
- Take initiative on ways to improve and streamline processes
- Ensure the highest level of customer service is provided to all volunteers, donors, and clients
QUALIFICATIONS
- Bachelor’s degree or equivalent industry work experience
- Five-Seven years of experience in communications and marketing, with a successful track record of setting, measuring, and delivering on goals for marketing and communication strategies
- Strong relationship builder with ties in the Indianapolis business community and surrounding area
- High organization and prioritization skills
- Proficient with Microsoft Office; including Outlook, Word, and Excel. Willing to learn Salesforce.
- Proficient with Salesforce and the Salesforce Marketing Cloud and MarCom tools like Canva preferred.
If not proficient, the candidate will be expected and required to build proficiency quickly leveraging available resources. - High level of passion and commitment to the DFSI mission

- Visual: Required to view and/or prepare reports and other written or computer-generated documents
- Oral: Required for heavy communications by telephone and one-on-one conversations
- Hearing: Required for heavy communications by telephone and one-on-one conversations
- Dexterity: Required for heavy keyboard use and preparation of documents, reports, and presentations.
- Other Physical: Requires sitting and standing for extended periods of time.
