Gina Shockley demonstrates how volunteerism and leadership can inspire women in everyday life. Her work strengthens community and uplifts the women we serve.
Here’s what Gina shared about inspiring others through service, community, and everyday action:
- What inspired you to get involved with Dress for Success Indianapolis?
My passion for fashion led me to volunteer as part of a corporate Women’s group event, where I first discovered Dress for Success. What began as a one-time commitment evolved into an eight-year journey dedicated to empowering women. Through training, it deepened my commitment to their mission of professional development. As a volunteer, providing access to invaluable resources is deeply rewarding. I understand firsthand the transformative impact this support has for a woman navigating both life and a career. I am honored to help others achieve the professional success and independence they deserve.
- What impact on women have you seen through volunteering?
As a Personal Shopper at Dress for Success, I have had the privilege of helping women build confidence and secure a stronger sense of self. While societal pressures often encourage women to compete and compare themselves to others, I encourage the women we serve to embrace exactly who and where they are in life. By encouraging them to appreciate their current bodies and not to focus on sizes, my experience has been transforming a potentially stressful styling appointment into an empowering, highly satisfying, and exciting experience.
How does volunteering change the way you see women’s potential?
I have always admired the strength and perseverance women display, but volunteering at Dress for Success has truly reinforced that belief. Many of the women I encounter share a desire and plan to achieve their goals. By providing professional attire and career development resources we assist them with additional tools to boost their confidence and unlock their full potential. Several have shared their successes which is a testament to what women can accomplish with additional support.
- Why does showing up for women matter?
When I show up to volunteer my goal is to make the women we serve feel like they are the most important person in the room. I do this by immediately engaging with them, being an active listener, and creating an environment where they are comfortable sharing any feelings or experiences of their choosing. I have found that this approach allows them to drive the tone of the appointment and they generally leave feeling more empowered and confident.
- What would you tell someone thinking about empowering women through volunteering with Dress for Success Indianapolis?
Volunteering with Dress for Success is an incredibly rewarding experience. As a woman of faith, I believe utilizing our time, talent, and treasures to serve others is a profound calling. This organization has allowed me to channel all three into a mission that empowers women to succeed. If you are considering volunteering, I encourage you to take that step. There is nothing more fulfilling than providing the tools and confidence necessary for another woman to unlock her full potential and achieve the professional independence she deserves.
