Detra Fletcher, born in Indianapolis, Indiana, is the ninth of her 11 siblings. Her parents, originally from Rome, Georgia, moved to Indianapolis for her father’s job. Tragically, Detra’s mother passed away at the age of 38 when Detra was just three years old, leaving her with only vague memories. Detra often reflects on how proud her mother would be of her life journey.
Growing up, Detra was influenced by her favorite aunt, who took her under her wing. Her aunt was the rock of the family, helping to raise Detra and seeing potential in her that she did not yet recognize. She made sure Detra was well cared for, walking her to school and nurturing her with love and support.
At 16, Detra became a mother just as she was entering high school. Despite facing significant challenges, including financial struggles, homelessness, and relying on welfare, she persevered and graduated with her class in 1978 while living with her sister.
Detra’s journey toward self-sufficiency began when she joined the Keys 2 Work program, which led her to Dress for Success (DFS) in 2006. Although initially anxious, she quickly found a supportive community that provided her with knowledge, understanding, and the clothing she needed to succeed. The experience ignited her ambition, and she pursued further education, earning a Paralegal certificate in Liberal Arts and a degree in Human Services from IUPUI at the age of 60.
During her time with DFS, Detra took on various roles, each contributing to her personal and professional growth. She spoke at ‘TABLESCAPES’ at Ulen Country Club in 2011, participated in a community outreach project (CAP) in Indianapolis, and even received training in San Francisco with DFS Worldwide. However, her most significant role was in the DFS Leadership Group, where she served as the Community Outreach Coordinator. In this role, she welcomed new clients and shared the organization’s mission, showcasing her leadership skills and inspiring others to follow her lead.
Dress for Success profoundly impacted Detra’s life by increasing her confidence, providing support, and teaching her the value of sisterhood. Her advice to other women is to seek out programs like DFS, stay encouraged, and find strength, determination, and motivation to move forward. Her personal motto is: “There is never a dull moment; there is always something to do.” Now 64, Detra continues to stay active and is a proud grandmother of eight.
