Fast Facts
- I’m an only child. There’s a whole backstory but yes, I’m an only child.
- I was a hair away from choosing Trauma Surgery as a medical specialty, but the rigors of the call schedule didn’t allow me to breastfeed and pump regularly for my 3 baby boys.
- COVID taught me how independent and self-reliant I really am. I have portions of a book drafted about my experience and what I learned about disaster preparedness and global pandemics.
Q & A
“Elevate” is this year’s theme. What does elevate mean to you, and how are you living it out right now?
Elevate means to rise up above everything else around so that you have an aerial view. I think of the view a drone provides. Right now, I’m living out ‘elevate’ in a way that mostly serves others while my own ‘area’ is pending more attention. However, this very opportunity with Dress for Success is allowing me to ‘elevate’ and I’m so grateful. Some days, as women, we feel like we are ‘losing’ ourselves. So, for me, getting that broad perspective with an aerial view is elevation enough to help me determine ‘next steps’.
Describe a moment when you stepped into a new level of confidence or growth?
One of my first positions out of residency training was in a small community hospital. I realized that I was literally the only doctor in the hospital. There was no other physician close by and I was it. Not only did my immediate team of nurses and other hospital staff need me to be everything I’d prepared and been trained for, but so did the community. It was a huge moment that I had to step into, and while there was nervousness and fear, there was tremendous growth in that moment. I’ve used that moment to help build my confidence during other times of challenge and uncertainty.
What empowerment advice would you give a woman who’s ready to take her next step?
Just take it. Time will pass anyway, so spend less time worrying about how long it will take and just start taking steps. Imperfect action is still movement. It’ll get you closer than you were if you had never moved at all.
Explain what motivates or grounds you when life or work feels challenging?
Motivation feels like something that fuels you to press ahead. Being grounded feels like something that causes you to be still, to listen, focus, and reflect. I’m motivated by those who need and depend on me. I feel grounded when I focus on the beauties of nature. I’m grounded by the splash of the ocean, fresh coconut, and the sand at my feet.
